The Connection Between Sleep Positions And Personality

We all have comfortable sleep positions which we have been habituated to since our childhood. It’s commonly said that observing someone’s sleeping habits can reveal a lot about their personality. We are better in so many ways depending upon how well we sleep. It helps us to be better in relationships, to perform tasks well, to communicate effectively, and to cope up with stress. So, how we sleep has an impact on our behavioral patterns to some degree. The fact is that we shift positions ten to thirty times per night while sleeping! Many elements, like how comfortable our mattress is and how our partner sleeps, are purely external.

The Most Common Sleep Positions

The fetal position

The fetal position is when you’re curled up like a baby on your side, knees bent towards your chest. This is the most popular sleep position which is more common in women than men. The sleeper’s urge to be protected from the outside world and to feel safe is symbolized by this posture. If you sleep in the fetal position, you may be a gullible person who is really sensitive yet attempts to project a tougher exterior.

The yearning position

This sleeping position entails stretching your arms out as though you were reaching for something. It’s a frequent sleeping posture that could indicate that, while you’re open to others, you’re also hesitant to trust them. You can also be skeptical of others and take a long time to reach a final judgement about them.

The stomach sleeper

If you sleep on your stomach, you should know that it is the least prevalent form of sleeping position. Furthermore, sleeping face down increases the risk of neck injuries and might be dangerous to pregnant women. You might be a social butterfly and a highly friendly person if you sleep on your stomach. You might come out as a little brash at times, though. Because you are uneasy on the inside, you dislike being criticized.

The log sleeper

You sleep like a log if you lie on one side with your arms on your sides. If you recognize yourself in this sleeping position, you are a warm and trustworthy individual. You might also be an easygoing, sociable, and self-assured person. Log sleepers are also more prone to believe that they are in good health.

The starfish

A starfish sleeper is someone who sleeps on their back with their arms raised and legs slightly apart. An increased risk of sleepwalking has been associated with this position. Sleeping starfish are known for being excellent listeners. They are friendly, yet prefer to let others be in the spotlight.

The soldier

Do you lie down on your back with your arms at your sides while sleeping? This is a soldier’s position. Soldier sleepers are usually reserved and silent. They hold themselves to extremely high standards. Soldiers who sleep in this posture claim that they like it for its health benefits and that they rarely change positions throughout the night.

Shift Work Sleep Disorder (SWSD)

Sleep issues caused by working long or irregular hours are known as shift work sleep disorder. Any work schedule outside of the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. is referred to as “shift work.” Employees who work night, early morning, or rotational shifts are more likely to develop symptoms. Shift work disorder, if left untreated, can lead to serious health problems. The worker’s professional performance may be harmed as a result of the condition, and they may be more likely to make an error or be engaged in a workplace accident. It is critical to recognize shift work disorder symptoms and seek treatment for the patient’s health, well-being, and safety.

Symptoms Of SWSD

When shift employees start working irregular hours, they often have trouble sleeping. To be diagnosed with a shift work condition, a worker must have recurring symptoms for at least three months and show altered sleep-wake cycles for at least two weeks using actigraphy and sleep tracking. Additional tests may be ordered by doctors to check that the symptoms are not caused by another illness or condition.

Insomnia: People who suffer from shift work disorder frequently have trouble getting asleep and staying asleep. Insomnia symptoms vary a lot depending on the nature of the shift. Workers who start work between 4 and 7 a.m., for example, have a hard time falling asleep, whereas those who work evening hours wake up frequently throughout the night. Shift workers lose one to four hours of sleep per night on average.

Excessive sleepiness: When a person works during the night or early morning hours, shift work disorder can induce drowsiness and decreased alertness. At least once during their shift, they often feel the desire to take a nap. These issues can reduce their ability to perform and put them in danger.

DiseasesPeople who suffer from shift work disorder are more likely to get diseases like cancer, cardiovascular illness, and gastrointestinal problems.

Poor mental health and social functioning: Irregular work shifts create disturbances in their mental health. Such workers may suffer from irritability, severe mood swings and anxiety attacks. They also have problems in social functioning as their routine drastically differs from the people who have normal work timings.

Alcohol and drug dependency: People who suffer from SWSD self-medicate with alcohol or drugs to improve their sleep quality. They go in search of such things to compensate for their lack of sleep.

Imbalanced diet: The imbalances in the diet is another consequence of SWSD. Because of the irregular work timings, such employees may either eat excessively or they lose appetite.

How To Follow A Healthy Diet For A Healthy Sleep?

We all know that our life style, nature of work, daily routine and the mattress we use affects our sleep. But, does our food habits also have an effect on our sleep? The answer is a big ‘yes’. Researches suggest that our food intake plays a major role in determining the quality of our sleep. While certain foods have the power to induce sleep, a few others can have a really negative impact on our sleep and make us feel tired the whole day. Let us discuss a few common food habits that can benefit or harm our sleep.

Food Items That Induce Sleep

Melatonin diet – Follow a diet that has rich supply of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin, especially during night. This include red grapes, tart cherries and milk that can be consumed after your dinner, before going to bed.

Malted milk – Milk is known to be a sleep-inducer in every part of the globe since ages. Many people make it a habit to drink a cup of warm milk before bedtime, though only a few are aware of its soporific properties. It has an ingredient known as tryptophan that helps us to fall asleep faster. If the milk is added with a tablespoon of malt powder containing wheat and barley, it becomes the perfect combination that can give you a good night’s sleep.

Carbohydrate – According to studies, people consuming rich carbohydrate diet like rice and wheat have been found to fall asleep faster compared to those having low carbohydrate intake. But this does not apply to those taking high sugar food as a substitute for carbohydrate.

Fatty fish – Fatty fish helps in the production of serotonin, a hormone that keeps us happy and provide better sleep. People who consume fishes like salmon 2-3 times per week are found to get good sleep during night.

Food Items That Distract Sleep

Alcoholic drinks – Many people consider alcohol as a supporting factor for good sleep due to its tranquilizing property. But, it has also many negative effects that counter its positives. It can make you dull, weaken your nervous system and make you sleep deprived in the long run. So, it is better to keep away from alcohol at least 4-5 hours before sleep.

Caffeine – Being the major ingredient of coffee and tea, caffeine can keep you active and disturb your sleep. It may be useful in mild quantity during day hours to remain active, but make sure to avoid it at least 2-3 hours before sleep.

Spicy foods – Reduce the amount of spicy food during dinner. Spices have a tendency to make us active and it also takes extra effort for our body to digest them. This can make our stomach upset and cause disturbance during sleep.

High water intake – Limit the amount of water consumption just before going to bed. We cannot deny the fact that water is very useful for our body. But, if we drink too much water within 1 hour before sleep, we will have to wake up to go to the bathroom in between sleep.

Conclusion

Following the above discussed food habits will help you a great deal to get the right kind of sleep that can keep you refreshed and active throughout the day. Other than food, there are also some other tips that will help you to get a sound sleep like exercise, meditation and getting the right kind of mattress.
